Librarian Book Manager  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)
Version: 3.12
by: Flamage, Orionik
Librarian records every book your character reads in-game and keeps a list of when it was found and whether you have marked it as read, allowing you to continue questing (and not hold up other players) while being confident you won't forget to read anything later.

Any suggestions, bugs or general discussion about the addon can be posted in the comments tab above, in my author portal (button on the right) or in this forum thread.

Features:
- Ability to mark books as read / unread. Books are marked as unread initially so you can feel free to skip reading while questing and know that your book will be easily found later.
- When reading a book, an is shown for books not marked as read (can be disabled in the settings)
- Displays the books in the default book reader interface.
- Imports books you have already read from the Lore Library / Eidetic Memory.
- Records the time each book was first discovered.
- Optionally view books found on your other characters.
- Sorting by unread / read status, time discovered, book title and word count.
- Full text search of all the books in your collection.
- Displays a count of the total number of books found so far and the number that are unread.
- Key binding to open the Librarian window (and a bonus keybind for /reloadUI).
- Optional reminder to /reloadui (and force a save of Librarian data) when a certain number of new books have been discovered, to help prevent loss of data if the client crashes.
- Add some icons in "Lore Library" to see which books are read and which aren't and add possibility to mark them as read/unread there (can be disabled in the settings)

How to use:
- Bind a key for Librarian in the Controls, Keybinds settings menu, or type /librarian into the chat window to open Librarian.
- Click a book or press the action button ('E' by default) while hovering over a title to read that book.
- Hover over a title and press the secondary action button ('R' by default) to toggle the unread state of the highlighted book. You can also toggle the unread state of a book while reading it.
- Click on the column headers to sort by that field. Click again to sort in descending order.

SavedVariables warning:
Librarian relies on SavedVariables to store information about the books you have found. If this file is lost or corrupted, that information will be lost. Therefore, it is important to backup your saved variables regularly. This is quite simple:
1 - Go to your SavedVariables folder (on windows, this can be found at MyDocuments\Elder Scrolls Online\live\SavedVariables.
2 - Create a folder called Backup.
3 - Select Librarian.lua and right click, select copy.
4 - Open the Backup folder, and paste the file.

With version 3, the save was entirely adapted to fix some issues and allow to reduce its size but it is better to copy it elsewhere before updating the addon in order to easily rollback in case of a problem.

Although, if you encounter an issue and didn't copied your save before the update, you can rollback your save by editing your save file (MyDocuments\Elder Scrolls Online\live\SavedVariables\Librarian.lua) and replacing the sections "characterBooks" and "books" of the "Librarian_SavedVariables" table with the content of "LibrarianDeprecation_SavedVariables_Backup" which is in LibrarianDeprecation.lua (next to Librarian.lua). Then you can, install back the previous version of the addon.

Dependency:
- LibAddonMenu-2.0

Starting from v3.5, Librarian is able to display books added by "The Librarium" add-on. If you want more books and see what the ESO community can produce, you should check it out. Big thanks to Alianym for making this collaboration possible.

3.8 2022-11-02
- Updated API for Scribes of Fate (101037)

3.7 2022-11-13

- Updated API for Firesong (101036)

3.5 2022-10-03
- Add API for external addon to be able to register their own books to Librarian

3.4 2022-09-11

- Add possibility to delete books which don't have a category

3.3 2022-08-23
- Updated API for Lost Depths (101035)
- Widden "Found" column for 12Hour format

3.0 2022-07-25
- Updated API for High Isle (101034)
- Fix issues
- Add icons in lore library
- Add option to mark book as read directly from lore library
- Remove Import from before patch option which was meant for save created back in 2015
- Remove some deprecation code for save before 2015
- Deprecate global saves to use bookId as identifiers instead of the title (several books had the same name) and remove all data that could be retrieved thanks to ESO API now that we have the bookId (title, body, medium, showTitle, wordCount). It lightens the save (~2MB for all the books on one character) and allow the player to switch language (although a few books can't be retrieved with their bookId because they don't have a category/collection so for them all the data are kept). Keep for now the previous save in a separate table in case there is a mistake in order to be able to roll back)
- Deprecate characterBooks save, it now references the bookId instead of the title and fill at the same time the unreadPerCollection list
- Optimize ImportFromLoreLibrary by removing the Refresh every frame (without it, past 1000 books, the game slow down a lot and at 4000 you end up with less than 1fps)
- Activate back auto importation from init now that it is quick enough
- Add full localization and support for french language
- Add a small timer before refreshing the list when doing a research as we could trigger a crash if we were typing a search too fast when we have too many books
- Improve settings (better integration with LibAddonMenu and add a few options)
- Add category column in Librarian UI
- Use smaller font in order to fit all of the text in the UI
- Add button to select if you want to search through the Full-Text or just the Title of the books

- Big changes on the data storage side. Actual book data is stored in an account-wide variable, and only the time found is stored per-character.

1.0.3 2014-4-15
- Added a settings screen which can be accessed from the standard settings menu.

MediaFire is safe. It's a commonly used and well-trusted site for file hosting.

If you're worried about my file? Well, I could give you assurances but what are they worth? What I can tell you is that the only things in there that could be harmful are those that are used outside the game. That's the utilities. Whilst you could read the code of the utilities to see that they're safe, you might be paranoid about the lua binaries. There's no reason why you should trust me, so you can either go ahead and delete the lua binaries and download them from the lua website; Or, if you'd prefer, just delete the entire Utils folder. The rest of it is only used within the game's lua environment. There can be no possible harm to be done, there.

With paranoia and the Internet there's nothing to be done and there's nothing I can do. It's either something you trust, or something you don't. I won't be manipulative and try to engender trust as it's all the same to me whether anyone uses my work or not. The only reason I uploaded it is because I felt guilt about having a working Librarian with fixed code when others would have to deal with something broken. I don't like being one of the haves, so to speak. It's not in my nature.

I should ask questions
the new version of the addon that is on mediafire.com also affects some addons like lorebooks?
is there a chance that you would be back to the eso to add the addon via a minion?
then when trying to download my antivirus ESET has been removed from the site has been blocked since it is on the list with dangerous content, could I use the storage where is it safe?

Poop. Librarian isn't flagged to allow patches. Sorry. Is it okay if I do this here, still?

Update

What's new?

This update is all about the sorting system. Specifically books being renamed for better sorting. So The Noble's Tale becomes Noble's Tale [The], The Gallant Steed: Part II becomes Gallant Steed [The]: Part II, A Lovely Green Apple becomes Lovely Green Apple [A], et cetera. That one.
  • I fixed a (cosmetic, don't worry) sorting issue for books that started off with The and ended with : Sermon [number];
  • I've improved the efficiency and functionality of the rename-sorting, it now works with a and an, instead of just the definitive article;
  • While I'm personally pleased with this functionality, I understand others might not like it so it can now be toggled on/off in the Librarian menu;
  • The utilities have been updated with this new code (sermon bug fixed, a/an handled, et cetera).
Anything else?

As always, if this is your first time using one of my Librarian edits, then I suggest reading the post a bit below where I talk about book IDs. It's very important. Anyway, enjoy!

Edited to fix BBCode and legibility.

Oh, would you look at that.

I still don't know why I was locked out. That kind of hurt and scared me, frankly, as I'd never done anything that called for it. Even though I'm kind of used to that.

I'll have to read my PMs eventually to find out what happened. Eventually. Not right now though as that would make me ill.

Edit:

Okay, if I am welcome here, I'll start uploading these as Librarian patches if that's permitted on this file. I'll put the changes in a readme.

Guh. The whole thing where my account got locked down did NOT do wonders for my anxiety, it really hurt. It'll take me a while to readjust. Especially now that I'm dealing with a metric craptonne of guilt on top of it.

@josh

I'll look into that.

Due to PTSD and generalised anxiety disorder and my account behaving exactly like it was banned, I never looked into it. I did log in a few days ago though and it was still acting like it was banned. I'll check it out.

I'm sorry I don't read comments as much as I should, I suffer with very bad anxiety and I can get upset and depressed really easily. That's why, even though I want to help, I'm not very responsive. It's incredibly easy to hurt me. Sometimes badly. So Internet comments don't always do great things for me.

What's new?

Just another merge utility update. Along with now listing which players didn't know which books (as it did before), it now lists which characters had seen those books, too. I figured that might be helpful information to provide.

Everything's all sorted nicely, too.

Anything else?

If this is your first time using my Librarian build, please read the stuff I wrote about book IDs and why I made this a couple of posts down. Thanks.

Are you reading comments at all Werewolf? Or your PMs? Your main account is active and able to be used! It WAS NEVER banned!

This one's going to have limited appeal. I've just improved the merge report from the merge librarian databases utility. It now reports on which books were missing from which respective databases, which is far more helpful than any information it'd shared prior.

For those just joining us, there are loads of changes in this build of Librarian which you can learn about by reading my comments, here. If you just want a Librarian that works, hop on board, but be warned that you should read my post below about book IDs.

Enjoy!

What's new?

Nothing new in the addon itself, just utility stuff.
  • Added utilities to backup and restore the database, usage thereof is documented in the Utility Instructions.rtf file.
  • Updated the utility that exports your read books to now sort them in the same way that Librarian does in-game (this includes the 'the' handling).
Anything else?

Yup. If this is your first time using my Librarian builds, please check the section of my last post about book IDs. It's pretty important. Thanks.

Update

What's new?

I'd been side-eyeing some functions related to Librarian's LibAddonMenu implementation for a while; And since I noticed it was confusing LAM, I decided to fix things up even more. It was basically just replicating a bunch of things that LAM already did, but Librarian's implementation was less efficient, if I'm honest. This meant dropping a whole 'nother round of pointless variables, tables, and functions from Librarian. Basically, OCD code cleanup. Also a fix for why Librarian's addon menu would sometimes get what you'd set as your alert wrong.

Librarian is getting so smol. Stripping it down to just what it needs to be in order to make it as efficien as possible brings me great, great joy.

You will, however, have to update your database to do away with the silliness of prior stored settings. Worry not, this won't touch your books! Just run the 'Update My Librarian Database' utility in the Utils folder. It'll do all that needs to be done for you.

Oh, I also updated the included LibAddonMenu library to 2.0-25.

Anything else?

Okay, it's been a while, so let me explain something...

The main implementation of Librarian's database is irreparably broken. If you've been using my builds before, you already know this. If you haven't? That's why I'm explaining it again. So the first time you use my version of Librarian (coming from the main one), you'll need to run the database update utility. This will wipe your books (you don't need to do this if you've already done it, of course). Why?

Good question. Well, it all comes down to how the Librarian database used to work.

It used to store books based upon book titles. The problem with this? ESO doesn't. ESO stores books by a numerical ID. And because of this, sometimes ESO has multiple books with the same name; Librarian, however, will only store the first book you saw with that name. On top of that, sometimes ESO changes the title of the book to fix typos, so you'd have two differently titled books with the same contents. And finally, if ESO updated the contents of a book (to add contents or to fix errors), Librarian would never update to reflect that.

This is all problematic, as you can imagine. The fix for all of this is to move Librarian's database over to book IDs instead of titles. Sadly, there's no way to get book IDs back from book information. If I could feed the book title, body, and medium (paper type variable) into a function and have it spit out the book ID, I'd do all I could to spare people from having their data wiped. Sadly, this function doesn't exist. There's no way to get a book ID.

You have two choices:
  1. Accept that your Librarian will be broken forever and that you'll never have a complete and bug/duplicate free collection;
  2. Wipe the database, start over, and have that complete book collection you'd always wanted.
I chose the latter for myself and updated Librarian accordingly, which you can download above. What you do is up to you. It's entirely your prerogative. In my opinion, though, the issues with Librarian will only grow and grow in time, so heartbreak is inevitable when something really gets borked. Using book IDs future proofs against any cataclysmic database events (since you'll be using what Zenimax Online uses internally).

How do you wipe your database?

Easy; Just run the Update My Librarian Database utility from the Utils folder. If it detects that you have a broken database, it'll wipe it.

I'm really sorry about this. Like I said, if I could feed in the data and get a book ID out, I'd do it. If such a function existed. As it stands, this is our only alternative. And it gives you the chance to experience the joy of building your collection again! I've found it quite cathartic, knowing that this time I'll be able to get every book.

Edited to fix typos.

  • OCD code cleanup. Realised there was more I could fix. Lots of pointless function calls just for strings (why?), global namespace pollution, and... other things. Things that bothered me so much I think I vaulted them as I know there was more. Anyway! Better now.
  • I realised that I broke the little gear button which brings up the options menu, largely because the options menu was being opened in... not the best way, to say the least (it was calling a slash command???). Fixed that.
  • Worked on the logic of when Librarian should alert you to having a new book as I realised the alert wasn't triggering quite right for those who have 'show all books' turned off (I never use that).

Anything else?

You may need to use the database updater under the Utils section. If you head into game and Librarian tells you it won't work without a database update, you'll need to do that.

If you're coming from the main version of Librarian, your database will be cleared. This is because the old Librarian database is irrevocably broken. There is no simple/quick fix to deal with this. I spent weeks trying to figure something out but nothing can be done. If you want to understand why, search for 'book IDs' in this page and read my post about it.

What's new?

Mostly, I just moved the database update script into a utility to save people from having to run the game to get that done. It just seems better this way. I also optimised a bit more because OCD is fun.
