TrueExploration  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)
Version: 1.10

TrueExploration

Until now you've had some magical atlas with a map for every zone, dungeon and even the daedric planes. Not anymore! With this addon, you have to "draw" your own maps.
Each map will start as an empty piece of paper, but as you travel and explore tamriel, your character will draw everything he/she sees.

This Addon is usefull for exploration fans and completionists, who don't want the exact locations revealed as in Destinations.

This addon is compatible with AUI's minimap and Votan's minimap.

Chat commands (should be used while the world map is opened):
/tedebug 1 activates debug mode
/tedebug 0 deactivates debug mode
While in debug mode, you can "draw" the map with your mouse. left mouse button to discover an area, right button to "forget" it again.

/discover completely discovers the currently displayed map.
/undiscover removed the previously set discovered flag.
/clearmap completely clears the saved data for currently displayed map.

Additionally the view radius and the opaqueness of the undiscovered texture can be set in the addon's menu.
ESC -> Settings -> Addon Settings -> TrueExploration

If you enjoy slow and immersive gameplay, try SlowDialogs.

Did you use /undiscover on a completely discovered map?

It's supposed to work like this:
If you have used /discover, /undiscover will set the map back to the known content.
If only the known content is displayed, /undiscover will (as the name suggests) clear the map.

edit:
working on variable view radius.
needs some testing because this also changes the amount of texture objects on the map and can result in horrible lag...
Thanks for the followup. Despite having installed the latest version through Minion, when I opened the LUA for True Exploration - it was an older version - just the LUA file. Weird. I did a complete uninstall and re-install and it now works as intended. Sorry for the false alarm. I would recommend a separate "/clearmap" command though. ;-)

I agree and would love to know how to tweak this as well. I would like to increase the radius of "explored" map by 1.5x or 2x.

if the map stays blank, it's a bug.
in this case try the following and tell me, if some parts of the map become visible:
-change the currently displayed map (rightclick then reselecting where you are).
-open the map, then use the /tedebug 1 command. afterwards click/drag the map. the map should become visible underneath your cursor.
-post a list of your addons. the bug is probably an addon conflict, as I don't have any issues.
Found the issue - it was your LightWeightMinimap add-on. As soon as I disabled that, the map uncovering worked as expected. I guess because the map is always open (from the minimap), it never refreshes. Which is a big bummer since I really like having a minimap up. Is there any chance of getting these two to work together?

In the TrueExploration.lua line 19 there is:
Lua Code:
  1. TrueExplor.undiscoveredColor = { 1, 1, 1, 1 }
The last value determines the opacity, where 0 = completely transparent, 1 = opaque.
So you could replace it with
Lua Code:
  1. TrueExplor.undiscoveredColor = { 1, 1, 1, 0.75 }
to make 75% visible. Maybe it has to be a bit higher to get Alisu's result.

regarding the everything is blanked out issue:
-when using the addon for the first time, nothing is discovered yet. You can use the chat commands to make areas visible. (see addon page)

-the current patch changed the structure of the saved files, so if you discovered areas before the patch, they will be blanked out again. (more information here)

-usually the map should becomes visible at the areas you have been to. the map is refreshed, when you open it or change the currently displayed map. so if the map is opened while you are walking, you won't see new areas until you close and reopen the map.

When I originally tried the addon it was somewhat off-putting but I found a way to make it awesome for me, which some others might benefit as well. Namely, I edited the alpha value for unknown area to be 0.85 and that works wonders.

I know it's not totally in line with the original intention of the addon but, even if having this as slash command which would require reloading ui to come into effect, I'd wager it might increase the amount of people who'd find this otherwise the most niftiest addon as something they love.

You can roughly see the edges of the zone, as well as some major roads, but it still, at least in my view, retains easily the "undiscovered area" quality quite nicely.

I don't know if a recent patch affected this mod or if it doesn't like the Rift, but I'm having some funny maps popup for "zoomed in" maps - like Riften in the Rfit. Hitting the M key will sometimes show the Riften Map and at other times show another map. Can nail it down though but it has happened frequently with these "zoomed-in" maps while questing in the Rift.

When opening/closing the map, there is a short fade in/out animation.
Unfortunately this animation sets not only the transparency of the map, but also of the fog. So for a short duration one can see what is underneath the fog.
Maybe I can fix this error by changing the animation.

I'd like to report something too:
When we open or close the map, we can see it without the "fog" during the fading animation.
That's something minor, but if you could do something, it would be greater than it already is !
Maybe add a delay hiding your overlay? Or whatever is occurring there that briefly flashes the full map.

Great work

Nicely done! I have been enjoying using this add-on.

The only thing I wish could be changed is, is there some way that we can increase the radius of when things are drawn automatically in the map? Sometimes it feels like it draws much shorter than the range of vision...

Let me know if I am missing something though.

Great work!
