Taz's Chat Notifier  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)
Version: 1.21
by: Tazmyr [More]
Are you missing Guild Chats, chats from Friends, or chats that have already scrolled-by?
This addon let's you configure selected sounds for inbound Chats you don't want to miss.

Features:
- Select from 11 different sounds (or Disable) for EACH of these inbound chats:
.. Guilds 1-5
.. Party (Group)
.. From someone on your Friends list
.. Whispers, Says, Yells, Zone
- You can disable sounds from your own outbound chats.
- Chat sounds for above can be enabled/disabled individually, or toggled-off altogether.
- Defaults get you started without even looking at settings - they are account-wide.

Dependencies:
LibAddonMenu-2.0

Keep in mind the ORDER of chat event handling...the FIRST one that is ENABLED sounds-off in this order:
- Party (group)
- Friends
- Guilds 1-5
- Whisper
- Say
- Yell
- Zone

If you're not getting the sound played as you expect, check in this Addon's Settings:
- Is the setting "Disable all chat sounds" set to YES? This will effectively disable this addon. It should be NO.
- Is the chat channel (Party, Friend, Guild, etc) SET to ON but the associated SOUND set to None?
- Are you expecting a GUILD sound from a FRIEND? Friend sounds play first (see list above)
(I set my Friends sound the same as my primary guild to help with this)
- Are you expecting a FRIEND sound while in a group/raid? PARTY sounds come before FRIENDs (see above list)

Warning:
Other addons like pChat may sound-off on certain chats, doubling your chat-sound fun. Just configure one of them to disable sounds from that chat channel to avoid overlap.

If you run into problems or are loving my addon, please leave a message in comments here.

Re: Custom Sounds

Hi Sidney,
It's because Zolan wasn't being maintained anymore and wasn't working for me that I decided to write my own. Thanks for giving mine a try.

It's my understanding that the game API does not allow custom sounds ... at this time. I'm told this option is being considered, but for now, gotta be standard in-game sounds. That said, it's a pretty long list. If there's a particular sound you would like me to support, let me know and I'll consider adding it. (Please be specific about what in-game event triggers the sound.)
Best!
Taz

  1. Is it possible to give us the option to add custom sounds?
  2. If so, can this be done through the in-game UI?

I imagine that if it is even possible, we'd need to add the custom sounds to a specific folder before loading the game.

Thank you

Re: Sounds not working

Key question: Under Settings for this addon, when you CHANGE one of the SOUND assignments, do you hear the sound? If not, what is your Settings/Audio/Interface slider set to? And did you DISABLE all other addons and /reloadui before running these tests?

Lastly, PLEASE respond and include:
- Your Play Region (NA/EU)
- Addon version (found at top of addon's Settings)
- Paste-in the contents of your settings file, usually at: Documents\Elder Scrolls Online\live\SavedVariables\TazChatNotifier.lua

You can also try setting the DEBUG option in my settings to ON. With each inbound chat, it adds info about what's going on. Most of it will seem cryptic, but each line ends with some notation about whether it played a sound or skipped it for some reason. If you see notations that it played a sound but you didn't hear it, some one of your general sounds settings or another addon is preventing it. Let me know what you find.

Something unique is happening for you, let's figure it out.
Please try the following and *please* report back here:

1) An easy general test is to change the SOUND selection drop-down for any setting (like "On Friend Sound" and it will play that sound regardless of any other settings. If you get no sound, something else is preventing it from playing. Check on:
-- Under Settings/Audio - what's the INTERFACE slider set to?
(This controls the volume level of these sounds. Try turning it up.)
-- Perhaps another addon is conflicting? Do you have any other chat addons installed?
Try disabling all other addons and check again? Does it work now?

2) If the above test worked OK, sounds played, let's verify settings and run a quick test:
In settings for this addon: Please verify/set:
- Disable All Chat Sounds = OFF (this is easy to get confused - must be OFF to enable sounds)
- Play Sound on MY Chats = ON (for this test)
- Set "On Say" = ON
- Set "On Say Sound" = Shhhoooom (You should hear the sound when you change this.)
- Leave Settings, go to Chat and use /s to SAY something, anything.
Chat will respond with "<yourname> says <whatever-you-said>" and you should hear the Shhhooooom sound.

Assuming that worked, it's just a matter of setting the other options the way you want them.
Still not working? Please provide:
- Your play region. NA / EU
- Addon version (found at top of addon's Settings)
- Paste-in the contents of your settings file, usually at: Documents\Elder Scrolls Online\live\SavedVariables\TazChatNotifier.lua

Re: Re: donk!

10-5-2020: I found this happening again with another game update, so coded what should be a lasting solution.
<fingers crossed>

Hi Again sMuggle,
I logged into the game today (9/23/2020) to find the same behavior you're seeing. The game patch released early this week has changed what the addon sees as the sender in a chat as the recipient. I saw this behavior one day last month but it "fixed itself" a day later - guessing it's a server-side thing with the chat handlers. I'll file a bug report and report back here when I know more. Thanks for bringing it up.

Edit: ...a few hours later ...
The issue "fixed itself" as I was digging deeper. I suspect a back-end fix was applied.
Please let me know if you are still having this happen.

Hi sMuggle - thanks for using my addon. The issue you mention was fixed in version 1.0.4, so be sure you're running the latest release and let me know if that fixes it for you.
(The version can be found at the top of an addon's Settings panel)
