<inion unable to connect to the internet

hi there,

if this post is in the wrong section, feel free to move it to the correct section

I've been using Minion fine for over 2 years, close to 3 years

just recently, in the last 2-3 months, from May to July, the Minion has been unable to connect to the internet, with this error message:

"Minion is unable to connect to the internet. Please check your firewall, security & proxy settings. Please visit our Help & Support page for additional information."

this is very odd, since I do have internet, I don't use any firewall, except the default that comes with Windows 10, I made no change in the settings of the firewall or proxy, everything is as it's always been for me, yet recently something is preventing Minion to work properly as intended.

Because of this issue, I've stopped using Minion, but it's sad, as it's a great mods management tool to use and I'd like to continue to use it, which is why I'm posting this cry for help here.

I could do simple steps of troubleshooting, but I'm not really sure what should I do.

I don't have access to the network settings or the router, but then again, I never did, I never needed it and it was working fine in the past.

If someone can give me some pointers, I'll try to do it, if it's not very complicated and time-consuming.

Thank you

same problem here with the windows client

However the java client just works fine, try that one

*edit* the jave version was fine yesterday but stopped working also, i only get a little black box opening
what did work in the past is reinstall and launch every time you want to use Minion (windows)

**edit**
reinstalling doesnt work either now, it is looking for the jrm ??????

All of your questions have been asked like 100 times already and you just need to use the search, and read (always check the top of forums before you post. About each forum here got sticky threads with information for most asked questions!):

a) Use the forum search in the Minion forum and search for "cannot connect" -> You should find plenty of similar posts if users asking the same and what the answers were

b) read the sticky thread named "Troubleshooting guide" at the top of this forum here please

I bet it got to do with either your Minion version -> needs an update
Or with your firewall and antivirus tools
Or with the java ip4 vs ip6 info (command line trick to change that, see sticky troubleshooting guide)
Or you are based in a country where your ISP blocks access to minion, try to reach the cdn website like described in the sticky troubleshooting guide
Or your VPN is blocking minion access

If that still does not help:
c) read the sticky thread named "If posting a bug report..." at the top of this forum here please

And post your Minion.log and xml files as asked for.

dear moderator, with all due respect for the hard work you put in every day here,

in my case, it's not what you bet...

I've been using minion for the last 2.5-3 years with the same firewall, the default Windows one, and no antivirus
I don't mess with ip4 vs ip6, it's the same as it was in the last 2-3 years
I'm based in the US, didn't move to any other country, since I started using minion, in the last 2-3 years
I'm not using a VPN, 'cause I don't need it, they can steal my minion details, I don't really care, it's a mod manager, not a finance manager
I do have the last version of the Minion, since when I try to update, it tells me that it's up to date

and I do have internet, I'm here, I'm in ESO where my minion is not working, so unless I'm missing something, I am still connected to the internet

I'll say it again, I've been using Minion for the last 2-3 years just fine, except in the last 3 months, it's not working anymore... I can easily give up on using it, if it's so complicated to get a direct answer from others smarter than me

Well, with all respect: If you think you did not change anything (did you check your system log files and know what Microsoft did with Windows updates? I doubt you know the details what is happening in the background of your operating system, each day),
no software was installed, that does not mean nothing was changed!
You simply can't know what was done in the background, and telling us you did not change anything does not help here.

Please read the troubleshooting guide and check your firewall and antivirus (I bet you are using one, like "Windows Defender" at least? If not you might have other problems. It's not wise to use the internet without any Antivirus!) and allow Minion in there -> Explicitly.
The internet shows you how to add programs/apps to the whitelist/exclusion lists. 1 example here:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...4-c301afe13b26

Please provide what I have asked for (my point c) ) and we can have a look at the files (minion.log and minion.xml).
If you do not want to provide them, and keep on going to say nothing was changed, we cannot do anything.
It's nothing about being smart, just reading our answer and attempts to help, and following them please to hep yourself ;-)

I agree that Microsoft and Windows updates are pushing in the background, without the user's permission a lot of stuff, so no I didn't check the system log files, and I agree with you on this...

yes, I'm using the default Windows Defender and no antivirus no VPN, and nothing extra because wise or not, I just don't have the time or patience to deal with maintaining them, and the updates from them...

however, my point is that Minion - a great tool for mod managing in my opinion - was working fine in the same configuration as it is now, same computer, same OS, same internet, same ISP, same default firewall, same non-existing antivirus, same everything that I am aware of, maybe except the crap pushed in the background that we have no clue about...

that's why I was confused, it worked just fine for over 2 years, almost 3 years, and all of the sudden, it didn't work anymore...

I will gladly provide all the files needed for review and troubleshooting and add it to exclusions for windows

Minion was added to the Exclusions, problem solved

thank you for the link to the help description that pointed out clearly how to do it correctly, it worked

no need to post extra files, although I wouldn't know where to find the extra needed files minion.log and minion.xml

in my C:\Users\...\AppData\Local\Minion I can't see them, but now it's all OK

what I'm confused about, as a non-expert, is how come it was working for over 2 years without being manually added to the Exclusions, and now I had to manually add it to the Exclusions, following your advice, just to make it work again...

I was just thinking that maybe since the last DLC was dropped, something changed and is creating problems

but, either way, it works now, problem solved, I'll be a happy camper using Minion again

so thank you for your assistance in this matter, I appreciate it

Every Windows or even Windows Defender update may add extra security checks and as Minion is an "older" Java tool it might get blocked as Windows no thinks it is mailcious code.

That could happen every time so got nothing to do with how long it worked. It depends on "when does Microsoft or any other of your used providers change anything".

I understand why you insist on "nothing changed" but that's how software actually works, everywhere So you cannot say "nothing changed" as you never know all that changes, and especially not when.
So these log files of Minion would have told me that by e.g. an error due to missing rights/access restrictions, and I'd have easily told you to add the exclusion to Windows Defender then directly (just as an explanation why I asked for the files "to help yourself" ).

Just for the future if you got other problems:
The files in your AppData folder might be hidden, or the total folder might be hidden, so you need to enable to see hidden files and folders in your
windows explorer:
